The Art of Arthur Szyk

Gary Tiffin

Arthur Szyk was a graphic artist; he is considered by many to be the finest 20th century miniature artist. He was appointed Court Painter to the League of Nations. He was also a cartoonist who skewered Adolf Hitler mercilessly. Hitler placed a $50,000 price on his head due to his more than 400 widely published cartoons. He escaped Europe, living in New Caanan Connecticut during World War II. While in the U.S, he was commissioned by a stamp album publisher to make title pages for a series of about a hundred albums. Szyk died after completing only a few; those he produced are masterpieces! But the publisher was so disappointed that the commission wasn't completed that he didn't use any of them.
Gary will present examples of his art and cartoons.
